It’s hard to answer this question, especially if you don’t know the signs of an air flow issue in your ducts.

Even if you do know what to look for, it may not be immediately noticeable that your HVAC ducts are in need of cleaning. The symptoms of dirty ducts can be very subtle, ranging in intensity from puzzling to mildly annoying.

Air Quality in the Home

So, what’s the big deal with dirty ductwork? Well, the most important thing to know is that buildup of particles on the walls of your ventilation system can lead to poor air quality and poor air flow. Vents will not blow as much air as they used to and the air they are blowing could contain a bunch of dust particles.

It’s very rare for you to be able to detect that the quality of your air has degraded. You most likely wouldn’t be able to smell any difference, nor would you be able to see any change in the air. There wouldn’t be a noise associated with the buildup of dust particles in your ventilation system, either.

Something that you may notice—especially as allergy season draws nearer—is that your allergies are acting up, even while you’re indoors. This is because a number of allergens are building up in your ducts and being pushed out of your A/C’s vents.

Another common thing you may notice is that the air flow coming from your vents has significantly lessened. This is a gradual process, however, so it may take some time to notice that something isn’t quite right.

Finally, you could be quite puzzled at the appearance of another layer of dust on your belongings soon after you dusted. This is from a much larger than normal amount of dust particles being expelled from your vents. The dust fills the room and slowly drops down on top of your furniture, creating more work for you.

Keeping Air Quality High

Regular maintenance of your ductwork is a good way to avoid these situations. Another great way to avoid them altogether is to install a filter that keeps your home’s air quality great throughout the year. The filter takes all of the nasty stuff out of the air, including dust, pollen, and dander.

Atlas offers Trane CleanEffects filters, which are designed specifically to clean residential spaces and keep your ventilation system working to the best of its ability. These filter systems are energy efficient and can drastically improve your quality of life, helping you to avoid inhaling nasty particles of whatever’s in the air.
